Megaman’s new Incanda LED range, putting the sparkle back in LEDs

The Megaman Incanda LED range has revolutionised LED lighting. The lamps are uniquely designed to resemble point light sources and emit a brilliant sparkling beam, similar to that of an incandescent lamp.

The Incanda LED series was created with sustainability in mind, saving up to 89% in energy consumption (vs. traditional incandescent lamps) without any detriment to the light source’s performance. The Incanda range offers massive savings and is particularly suited to large venues such as hotels, restaurants, lounges and bars which would benefit from the luxury of sparkling light.

The Incanda range includes, Candles, Golf Balls and GLS lamps in BC, SBC and ES caps, these are all designed to replace expensive, inefficient incandescent lamps. Incanda LEDs' clear, glass finish enhances the sparkling effect of the lamp making them perfectly suitable for application in chandeliers or crystal light fittings. Incanda lamps are a viable energy saving replacement to traditional incandescent lamps with a high luminous efficacy of 100 lumens per watt and an extended lamp life of up to 50,000 hours. The dimmable versions of the Incanda LED lamps offer linear dimming from 100-10%, allowing you to create a variety of ambiances.

Philips present the world's first clear LED lamp

Global lighting innovators Philips, have bought the traditional incandescent lamp into the 21st century by combining the aesthetic beauty of incandescent lamps with the latest LED technology. Philips' clear LED lamp has a unique innovative lens which emits beautiful light whilst retaining the classic shape of incandescent lamps.

This latest development is the biggest change to incandescent lighting in the past 100 years. This 40 watt lamp contains the first LED capable of emitting light in all directions. Whilst maintaining the elegant shape and sparkling light of traditional incandescent lamps, Philips' clear LED lamp saves energy, has a lifetime of 25,000 hours, emits 470 lumens and even when dimmed maintains the same brightness levels as its 40 watt incandescent counterpart.

Philips noted consumers' reluctance to switch-over to LEDs within the home as home-owners want to hold onto the traditional warm light and shape of incandescent lamps. Philips' clear LED lamp allows customers to hold onto the light they love whilst enjoying all the benefits of modern LED technology. The clear LED means the classic shaped lamp keeps its original beauty making it a seamless replacement for the standard 40 watt (A60 shape) lamp. This lamp is ideal for application in the living room and other areas where quality of lighting really matters.

Rene van Schooten, CEO Light Sources & Electronics for Philips Lighting said: “With our L-prize LED bulb we showed that we could match the quality of incandescent light. With our clear LED bulb we’ve combined the aesthetic beauty and shape of the traditional incandescent with the benefits of LED. Using our innovations in LED the bulb is highly energy efficient, saving up to £8 per lamp per year.”

International Student House’s Bistro LED Switchover

MasterLED GLS
International Student House (ISH), London accommodates university students and interns from over 100 different countries. ISH is not just a place to stay, it is a social and culture centre which holds lectures, debates, themed suppers and culture nights. The ISH has its very own bistro which by day is a busy modern restaurant transforming into a lively nightclub in the evening. Due to its multipurpose use, the lighting installed in the bistro can often be on for almost 24 hours a day.

ISE is committed to reducing its environmental impact and carbon emissions. As part of an £180,000 refurbishment of the ISH’s ground floor, LED lighting was installed in the bistro area. The LED switchover has doubled lighting levels, reduced power consumption by 84%, delivered savings of over £1,000 per annum and cut carbon emissions by almost 6,300kg a year. The lighting engineers opted to use Philips’ MasterLED bulb, MasterLED spot and Latina LED down-lighters.

MasterLED Spot
Latina LED Down-light
Philips’ Latina down-lighters were installed in the server area as they fit perfectly with its new design. The costly GLS pendant down-lighters in the server area were retrofitted with Philips MasterLED 8 watt lamps. Before the LED switch-over the dining area was lit with over 100 50 watt halogen down-lighters, the replacement lamps needed to illuminate the space during the day and not impact the night club ambiance in the evenings. With energy saving in mind, ISE opted to install Philips MasterLED spot GU10 7 watts lamps and remove the existing energy consuming halogen lamps.

How Does it Work? Philips MASTER LED GLS has a yellow cap but emits white light...

The answer to this question is simple: there are no white LED chips, they simply do not exist.

Philips’ MASTER LED GLS lamps have an unusual yellow appearance yet still achieve a colour temperature of 2700k. As soon as the lamp is turned on its yellow appearance disappears. This new innovative lamp is available in 13, 17 and 20w BC and ES caps, is dimmable and has 25,000 hours life.

The lamps colour is enabled by its remote phosphor design. To emit white light, a blue led chip is used and a yellow phosphor is applied over it. The combination of these two colours invokes the phenomenon known as metamerism. Metamerism occurs when our eyes and brain perceive two different but complimentary colours as mixing together to create a third complementary colour.  When the blue light shines through the yellow phosphor it is down-converted into what our eyes perceived to be white light.
Philips MASTER LED's
omnidirectional beam capabilities

The powerful specifically positioned blue LEDs are countered by the yellow phosphor coating producing a bright white omnidirectional light. The light emitted from the lamp can be radiated in any direction, even downwards, allowing it to emulate an incandescent lamp.
