Lightsave Fuller Read Lighting Project: River & Rowing Museum, Henley-on-Thames

Our sister company, Lightsave Fuller Read has helped the River & Rowing Museum reduce its energy costs and carbon emissions by replacing existing halogen light fittings with the latest LED light sources.

The LED switch-over is expected to reduce the River & Rowing Museum’s lighting energy expenditure by over £2000 per annum; the museum can also expect additional savings on their maintenance costs. It is expected the River & Rowing Museum will see a return on their initial investment in around three years (based solely on energy savings).

The River & Rowing Museum is located in the picturesque town of Henley-on-Thames and is one of the UK’s leading independent museums welcoming over 116,000 visitors a year. The museum is home to 20,000 items covering the international sport of rowing, the history of Henley-on-Thames, the story of the River Thames and the children’s book the Wind in the Willows. The vast collection includes objects, photographs, books, ephemera and archive material.

The focus of the lighting upgrade has been improving the energy performance in the museum’s three main galleries; the Schwarzenbach International Rowing Gallery, the Invesco Perpetual Henley Gallery and the River Gallery. In addition to this, the Lightsave Fuller Read team felt some of the smaller galleries would also benefit from being upgraded to LED lighting.

Andrew Brown the facilities manager said: “We are always looking for ways to improve our energy efficiency and the Trustees are very supportive of green initiatives. We had identified that upgrading to LED lamps would reduce lighting energy consumption; the team at Lightsave Fuller Read spent a lot of time with us testing a number of different lamps until we found the perfect solution. It was particularly important that the curators also had input to the selection process in order to ensure that factors such as colour balance and energy performance were considered.”

Philips Master LEDspot LV MR16
Alan Kilford, Managing Director of Lightsave Fuller Read added: “We helped the museum to set up trials of different lamps so they could evaluate the options available and select the best solutions based on a range of criteria. It was clear that Philips LED lamps would deliver on all of these requirements.”

The Schwarzenbach International Rowing Gallery, which is also used for hospitality events, was previously lit using 170 halogen downlights, with a mix of 20 watt and 35 watt lamps. These have now been replaced with Philips 4 watt Master LED MR16 lamps, allowing the original fixtures and light levels to be retained.

Philips Master LEDspot LV AR111
The other two main galleries have higher ceilings and so a higher light output is requires. They were originally lit using costly, 50 watt and 75 watt AR111 halogen lamps to achieve the required illuminance at floor level. At the recommendation of Lightsave Fuller Read, these lamps were replaced with around 100 Philips Master LED AR111, it is predicted this simple change will lead to huge savings in maintenance costs as Philips Master LEDs have a lamp life of 45,000 hours and therefore do not need to be replaced as often as their halogen counterparts meaning less time is spent fitting lamps at great height.

Andrew Brown concluded: “There has been a big improvement in light quality and the feedback from staff and visitors has been very positive. In addition to the energy savings, this project will reduce our CO² emissions by nearly 10,000 kg per annum.”

International Student House’s Bistro LED Switchover

MasterLED GLS
International Student House (ISH), London accommodates university students and interns from over 100 different countries. ISH is not just a place to stay, it is a social and culture centre which holds lectures, debates, themed suppers and culture nights. The ISH has its very own bistro which by day is a busy modern restaurant transforming into a lively nightclub in the evening. Due to its multipurpose use, the lighting installed in the bistro can often be on for almost 24 hours a day.

ISE is committed to reducing its environmental impact and carbon emissions. As part of an £180,000 refurbishment of the ISH’s ground floor, LED lighting was installed in the bistro area. The LED switchover has doubled lighting levels, reduced power consumption by 84%, delivered savings of over £1,000 per annum and cut carbon emissions by almost 6,300kg a year. The lighting engineers opted to use Philips’ MasterLED bulb, MasterLED spot and Latina LED down-lighters.

Latina LED Down-light
Philips’ Latina down-lighters were installed in the server area as they fit perfectly with its new design. The costly GLS pendant down-lighters in the server area were retrofitted with Philips MasterLED 8 watt lamps. Before the LED switch-over the dining area was lit with over 100 50 watt halogen down-lighters, the replacement lamps needed to illuminate the space during the day and not impact the night club ambiance in the evenings. With energy saving in mind, ISE opted to install Philips MasterLED spot GU10 7 watts lamps and remove the existing energy consuming halogen lamps.

Philips 7 watt MASTER LEDbulb has been given a makeover….

MASTER LEDbulb 7 watt
Convex or Concave?

The MASTER LEDbulb Designer is Philips latest innovation; this new lamp can be combined with either a convex or concave cover enabling you to find the best match for the surrounding décor. This feature is also useful as due to the lamps extended lifetime it may well endure several re-decorations and so covers can been changed to create the desired ambiance of each renovation.

Each MASTER LEDbulb emits warm light similar to that of an incandescent lamp. It's sleek design makes it ideal for application in open fixtures where the lamp is fully visible. Similar to other MASTER LEDbulbs, the Designer lamp has excellent light performance, it is fully dimmable and offers up to 80% energy savings.

This lamp was created with the hospitality and retail industries in mind as within these sectors aesthetic design is especially important.

How Does it Work? Philips MASTER LED GLS has a yellow cap but emits white light...

The answer to this question is simple: there are no white LED chips, they simply do not exist.

Philips’ MASTER LED GLS lamps have an unusual yellow appearance yet still achieve a colour temperature of 2700k. As soon as the lamp is turned on its yellow appearance disappears. This new innovative lamp is available in 13, 17 and 20w BC and ES caps, is dimmable and has 25,000 hours life.

The lamps colour is enabled by its remote phosphor design. To emit white light, a blue led chip is used and a yellow phosphor is applied over it. The combination of these two colours invokes the phenomenon known as metamerism. Metamerism occurs when our eyes and brain perceive two different but complimentary colours as mixing together to create a third complementary colour.  When the blue light shines through the yellow phosphor it is down-converted into what our eyes perceived to be white light.
Philips MASTER LED's
omnidirectional beam capabilities

The powerful specifically positioned blue LEDs are countered by the yellow phosphor coating producing a bright white omnidirectional light. The light emitted from the lamp can be radiated in any direction, even downwards, allowing it to emulate an incandescent lamp.

Improved Light Quality, 18% Energy Savings, 12 Month Projected Payback, All Thanks To LED Lighting

The 5 star Hyatt Regency London- The Churchill boasts 434 of the finest rooms in London’s West End. Being a member of the Hyatt group, The Churchill aims to meet the group’s energy reduction goals; part of this initiative is an LED switch-over.

Working in partnership with our sister company Lightsave Fuller Read, The Churchill found that through replacing existing halogen lamps in corridors and bedrooms with LEDs from approved supplier Philips, they would receive a fast return on their investment.

Ian Odendaal, Hyatt’s Director of Engineering said: “Before the project could proceed we needed to demonstrate to the hotel management that there would be significant financial savings, while our lighting designers also had some reservations about using LED lighting. Working with Philips and Lightsave Fuller Read we were able to appease these concerns.”

Alan Kilford of Lightsave Fuller Read added: “Around 5,000 35w GU10 halogen lamps have now been replaced, using Philips MASTER LED 4w LED lamps with a 2700k colour temperature and a beam angle of 40 degrees. Some older LED lighting has also been upgraded to new Philips LED lamps as the original lamps did not have consistent colour appearance.”

The switch-over means The Churchill will now benefit from reduced energy costs and a smaller carbon footprint. “We calculate energy consumption on a month-by-month basis as it varies with factors such as occupancy levels and usage. These figures indicate energy savings ranging from 12% to 18% per month and we anticipate a return on investment within 12 months,” Ian Odendaal explained.

“There are also maintenance benefits. We were replacing around 550 lamps per month and this has now reduced to 50- these being the compact fluorescent lamps still used in bedside lamps,” he added.

The lighting project has resulted in improved aesthetics as well as a reduction in energy and carbon consumption. “There is a big improvement in the look and feel of the lighting. The halogen lighting was quite harsh but the LEDs give a warmer feel and soften the appearance of the wallpaper and carpets,” Ian Odendaal enthused. “We were very pleased with the support we received from Philips and Lightsave Fuller Read throughout the project,” he concluded.

Harrod’s New Sparkling Energy Saving Solution

The Wedgewood concessions in Harrods got its sparkle back thanks to Philips new lighting innovation, the lotus lens.

Making the switch from existing halogen lamps to LED candles has resulted in a 74% reduction in installed electrical load, reduced maintenance requirements and considerably lower heat gains.

Wedgewood, a luxury home and lifestyle brand light their retail space using chandeliers that are also part of their lighting product range. The chandeliers must look their best, providing good lighting in order to attract customers.

“When the Wedgwood concession was opened the chandeliers were fitted with 15 watt halogen candle lamps,” recalled Harrods Engineering Technical Manager Mark Fleming.
“These provided the required visual effect but their high heat output meant the air conditioning was unable to maintain comfortable conditions. The inherent inefficiency of halogen lamps also meant that energy was being wasted,” he continued.

At first the 208 halogen lamps were replaced with standard LED candles, sadly these failed to match the sparkling appearance of the previous halogen light source. Philips then presented Harrods with the new MASTER LED candle which features a diamond shaped acrylic lotus lens specially designed to provide extra sparkle. Through replacing the old 15 watt halogen lamps with 4 watt MASTER LED candles, Harrods has reduced both its electrical load and energy consumption. Due to the removal of the high heat halogen lamps, this switch has also reduced the energy consumption of the air conditioning. Another benefit of the LED switch-over is down to the MASTER LED’s 20,000 hour life span, increasing the period between lamp replacements and saving on maintenance costs.

Harrods Engineering Technical Manager Mark Fleming says: “The chandeliers now look brilliant and the shop floor staff is very happy with the new candle lamps. We will be specifying them for all of the chandeliers throughout the store in the future”.

How We’ve Helped 21 Principal Hayley Hotels Across the UK Reduce Their Energy Consumption….

The LED Specialist and our sister company Lightsave Fuller Read, Philips preferred supplier for their LED products helped our client, Principal Haley Hotels and Conference Venues embark on an energy saving initiative.

Principle Hayley Hotels and Conference Venues operate an eclectic collection of hotels across the UK. Venues range from Gothic manor houses to slick city centre hotels to purpose-built conference and training venues. To adhere to the company’s strong sustainability policy and keep in line with standards laid down by the Green Tourism Business Scheme, the Principal Hayley Group has laid out a number of initiatives to reduce their environmental impact.

Principle Hayley, compares daily energy consumption with the same day of the previous year, this has established a high level of energy-awareness amongst their staff. Any anomalies identified through these comparisons are flagged up to senior staff and fully investigated meaning Principal Hayley venues are achieving maximum energy efficiency.

A major challenge when reducing the lighting energy consumption was that lighting varies a great deal from one site to another. Lightsave Fuller Read had to find a light source which would complement the unique character of each building whilst keeping energy consumption to a minimum.

Due to his wealth of experience with lighting before joining Principal Hayley, the companies Head of Property Management, Gregor MacNoughton had already identified Philips LEDs as the light sources that would meet his essential yet varied criteria. “I worked closely with our lighting supplier Lightsave Fuller Read to identify the areas where upgrading lighting would deliver a sensible return on investment, and with which lamps.”

Lightsave Fuller Read’s Alan Kilford explains how he tackled this project: “We looked at areas that were using light sources of over 20w and burning for more than 12 hours per day. Lamps within this group would provide a payback within two years based solely on energy consumption. The areas encompassed in this project included: restaurants, bars, corridors, kitchens and back of house areas. Philips’ Master LED range was ideal for this roll-out project as the lamps offer, long lamp life, a range of beam angles, a good colour rendering index and the company boasts excellent technical support.”

After each area had been identified, Alan was faced with the task of selecting the most suitable LED lamps for each individual setting. The nature of the buildings and the previous lighting meant the new Lightsave Fuller Read recommended light sources ranged from 7w replacements for 50w GU10 halogen lamps through to LED tubes to replace fluorescent lamps in kitchen and back of house areas.

Completion of this lighting project has resulted in Principal Hayley significantly reducing their installed lighting electrical load, energy costs and associated carbon emissions. The long life of Philips Master LED lamps means maintenance and replacement costs of lamps are significantly reduced. The lighting upgrade is expected to yield an overall reduction in energy consumption of 10% in the next 12 months.
